Bruce Petillo knows the stress parents face trying to care for a seriously ill child and make ends meet.

In 2003, Petillo's 4-year-old son, B.J., began having violent seizures. The attacks lasted for several hours at a time, and the boy was diagnosed with epilepsy.

After 2 1/2 years of treatment, Petillo said his insurance was maxed out and he owed $30,000 in unpaid medical bills. Looking at a stack of bills he couldn't pay, Petillo decided to sell his family's home in Southern California and move to a more affordable neighborhood in Gilbert.

Although Petillo was lucky to avoid a worse financial crisis, he wanted to help other parents who are confronting the same situation he did.

So, in 2007, Petillo launched the Fans Across America Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit group of sports fans that has helped provide temporary financial relief to families with severely sick children throughout the Valley.
